What Does God Do Every Day?

What does the Creator of the universe do every day? This is a thought we often overlook as we get involved in studying and seeking the deeper meaning of the Scripture. But such a simple question as to what the Most High does every day seems to have slipped our minds.

So, what does Elohim do every day? We may safely say that He runs the vast universe and takes care of the heavenly business as the Scripture clearly points to a heavenly council which we find in verses like 1Ki_22:19-22, Psa_82:1, Job_1:6, and Job_2:1. We read,

And the day came to be that the sons of Elohim came to present themselves before Yehovah, and Satan also came among them. (Job 1:6)

I saw Yehovah sitting on His throne, and all the host of the heavens standing by Him, on His right and on His left. (1Ki 22:19)

God standeth in the congregation of God; in the midst of the judges He judgeth. (Psa 82:1 JPS)

From the above verses we deduce that there is a council on an assembly day in heaven. All the messengers (angels) present themselves to give their account and to receive commands from the Sovereign of the universe according to His will. And when He judges, He consults with His heavenly council, for so we find regarding judging earthly kings, (1Ki_22:19-22): I saw Yehovah sitting on His throne, and all the host of the heavens standing by Him, on His right and on His left. The passage means that these angels were standing on the right side of the Judge to defend, and other angels were standing on the left to prosecute: more or less like in the house of court today.

Even though His messengers are created beings and by no means are close to the Creator by nature, power, and authority, He teaches us proper conduct that a great person should consult with a smaller one. This is what we learn from the Sages in Gen. Rabbah 8:9.

Or, as we find in the Book of Enoch, Book 2, 69:11: For men were created exactly like the angels, to the intent that they should continue pure and righteous, and death, which destroys everything, could not have taken hold of them,… In other words, YHVH teaches us that as He deals with His heavenly business and consults with His messengers, so should humans do. It is not clear from the above quoted passages as to the regularity of those meetings, whether they occur every day, month, etc. but we see that such meetings do occur.

With that being said, however, is there a verse that will tell us what the Creator does in heaven on a daily basis; what is His occupation all year around? There is such a verse, and this is the only time the Scripture tells us what the Creator does each day. We read,

Because the land which you are going in to possess is not like the land of Egypt from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and watered it by foot, as a vegetable garden, but the land which you are passing over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water from the rain of the heavens, a land which Yehovah your Elohim cares for. The eyes of Yehovah your Elohim are always on it, from the beginning of the year until the end of the year. (Deu 11:10-12)

His eyes are always directed towards His land: the land He promised and gave to the descendants of Avraham, Yitschak, and Ya’akov, from the beginning of the year to the end, the land of Israel.

The enemies of Israel are right in one thing: the land of Israel, the most contested piece of real estate on the face of the earth, does not belong to Israel; it belongs to the Creator, as everything in the universe does. This small sliver of land He has given to the descendants of Avraham, Yitschak, and Ya’akov as a possession forever. According to the will of YHVH, as recorded in the Torah of the land, the Israelites are not to sell or buy land permanently. They can lease it for maximum of forty-nine years, but in the fiftieth year, the land is to be returned to the original owner.

The promise to give the land to Israel forever, however, was not made unconditionally. The Israelites were then and are now to observe the laws of the sabbatical and jubilee years and keep the land unpolluted from abominations, idolatry, and unrighteousness. Contrary to this would be exile from the land as see this already happened with the destruction of the First and Second Temples. This is with regards to the nation of Israel.

The Almighty will not tolerate any attempt of the enemies of Israel to divide, occupy, and expel His people of the land either. For more insight on this, the reader may refer to the article The Dividing of the Land, the Covenant of Death, and the Judgement.

So, what does YHVH do every day? The eyes of Yehovah your Elohim are always on it, from the beginning of the year until the end of the year. He focuses His eyes on the Land of Israel.

And so must we!
