Tears in the Kingdom of Heaven

Posted by on Sep 22, 2021

It seems that there will be tears and crying in the Kingdom of Heaven before the restoration of all things and the coming of the New Jerusalem. Allow me, my reader, to become personal!

Yochanan saw a new heaven and a new earth, so that the former will not be remembered any longer. And after this he saw the New Jerusalem coming down out of the heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And a loud voice came from the heaven and proclaimed that YHVH would come to dwell with the people, and they would be His, and He would be theirs (Rev 21:1-3).

And then the same voice told Yochanan that YHVH Elohim would wipe away the tears from their eyes, and there would be no more death, nor crying, because the time for the kingdom of heaven had come.

Tears of sadness in the Kingdom of Heaven

Tears of sadness in the Kingdom of Heaven

And Elohim shall wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, nor mourning, nor crying. And there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. (Rev 21:4)

We may marvel, as the apostle too marveled, as to why there will be tears and crying in the Kingdom of Heaven after a thousand years of the Messiah’s reign.

We should recall that the same statement was made a thousand years earlier at his return, as we read thus,

They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more, neither shall the sun strike them, nor any heat, because the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne shall shepherd them and lead them to fountains of waters of life. And Elohim shall wipe away every tear from their eyes. (Rev 7:16-17)

That was written in order to fulfill what had been said to the ancient that YHVH shall wipe away tears from all faces and take away the reproach of His people,

He shall swallow up death forever, and the Master Yehovah shall wipe away tears from all faces, and take away the reproach of His people from all the earth, for Yehovah has spoken. And it shall be said in that day, “See, this is our Elohim. We have waited for Him, and He saves us. This is Yehovah, we have waited for Him, let us be glad and rejoice in His salvation. (Isa 25:8-9)

Swallowing up death forever and taking away the sin are expressions, the prophet used, for doing away with what is corruptible. Most certainly, this prophecy refers to the last days, when YHVH will remove sins and abolish death, so that there shall be no more traces left of them.

But all these sufferings YHVH will sweep away along with the tears. There is something very significant in the use of the expression “tears on all faces”. If there are tears on the face, YHVH wipes them away. And what YHVH wipes away, He removes the suffering along with the cause, so that there will be no more tears in the Kingdom of Heaven. (See also Isa 65:19)

What is the cause of the tears?

Apostle Shaul gives his rendering of the prophecy in Isaiah in the letter to the Corinthians,

And when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall come to be the word that has been written, “Death is swallowed up in overcoming.” (1Co 15:54)

Death will be swallowed up and overcome. But the abolition of sin and death is not the perfection itself. There will be sufferings in the Kingdom of Heaven, which will force out tears even after death has been conquered.

We should ask ourselves, “Why will people cry at the return of Yeshua haMashiach?” Should we not expect that everyone will be happy and rejoice with him? Why would there be any reason even to say that there will be tears in the Kingdom of Heaven?

Some may say that there will be people crying because of happiness. And most certainly, many will. They will be like the woman who was weeping and  kissing Yeshua’s feet and wetted them with her tears (Luk 7:38). These people will not be crying in their sadness, however, but in their joy; they will be happy. And people crying because of happiness do not need comfort.

Yet, the Scripture says that there will be people who will need comfort, because it is said that YHVH will wipe away their tears. And if they will need comfort, they will be crying from pain, and pain needs healing.

But why will there be tears in the Kingdom of Heaven in the first place? What pain and sadness, and not joy, will one feel at the return of Yeshua?

There is one reason why there will be tears in the Kingdom of Heaven.

After Mashiach has defeated all enemies of YHVH’s people at his return and has established the Kingdom of Heaven here on the earth, those who have been resurrected and found worthy of being in the kingdom, will turn around to seek for their loved ones—a father, a mother, sons, or daughters—but may find none. They will realize that they are alone in the kingdom and their loved ones have been left behind in the resurrection.

This pain in the heart will cause sadness, and sadness will bring tears in the Kingdom of Heaven. The first time they will cry for they have lost them once; the second time—for having lost them forever.

These tears are the words to the Father which we cannot speak.

May we merit seeing the coming of our Mashiach speedily in our days!
